Reviewed: Hot Chip – Why Make Sense?

Hot Chip return to the club floors with their latest release ‘Why Make Sense’ and it might be their most cohesive album so far.

This marks the sixth album for the band, following up from 2012’s ‘In Our Heads’, and for anyone who follows the band will know, they can definitely provide the hits and anthems. I’ve sometimes struggled with Hot Chip, finding a whole album a bit much and preferring to cherry-pick songs.

The first single to be released from the album ‘Huarache Lights’ takes a serving of electro-church-house realness that will definitely make you get you raising them hands in the air and praising whatever god you want to (I choose RuPaul). It’s the catchy, bust-moving sound that you would expect from the same duo that released ‘Over and Over’. Expect to hear this in your favourite bear bar for the next few years.

In terms of evolution, it mostly sounds like what you would expect from Hot Chip so there really aren’t too much in the terms of advancement but when Hot Chip have their own distinct sound that’s completely alright. In the case of ‘Huarache Lights’ and ‘Need You Now’, power house female vocalists are used to take the production and songs to a next level. It’s a very welcome addition.

In my eyes, Hot Chip definitely work in the cherry-picking sense. Not everything works and an entire album of theirs sometimes feels a bit much – imagine what their greatest hits will be like though! (Note: it’ll be awesome)

The album takes you down an electronic funk alleyway somewhere crossed between the 80s and 90s and its somewhere you should really visit once in a while.
