RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars Is Back

Three months from season eight’s crowning and RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars is back. With some of the most famous contestants from past seasons, All Stars is bringing with it a whole new twist.

RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars brings ten of the most famous girls from seasons two to seven together for the ultimate challenge – to lipsync for their legacy.

From season two there’s Tatianna, season four is represented by Phi Phi O’Hara, five queens from season five; Roxxxy Andrews, Detox, Coco Montrese, Alyssa Edwards and Alaska, season six has Adore Delano whilst Katya and Ginger takes up the season seven positions.

What’s the twist?

Instead of the two least-performed lipsyncing for their life each week, the two best-performing will lipsync for the chance to win the challenge each week. With the title comes great responsibility; they get to decide who is eliminated (dun, dun, dunnnn). This twist is expected to change the game completely, although I’m not sure how it will play out.

I wonder what will happen if one of the least known girls such as Tatianna or Coco Montrese wins the challenge, will they be too afraid to evict one of the big-league names like Alaska for fear of fan backlash? I guess it’s one way for RuPaul to avoid the fan backlash herself…

What’s going to happen?

Details are sketchy at the moment. Michelle Visage and Carson Kressley will return to the judging panel whilst Ross Matthews appears to have been replaced by Todrick Hall (sigh). All else that’s been ruvealed are a few of the guest judges who’ll be appearing throughout the show and they include Graham Norton, Raven-Symoné and Nicole Scherzinger.

I’m excited to see how some of my favourites interact with those from other seasons. An Alaska, Alyssa and Kayta partnership would be amazingly weird. It’s interesting to see five contestants from season five, and three of them had an alliance with each other (Rolaskatox – Roxxxy, Alaska and Detox). I’d have preferred some other names thrown into the mix as this just slightly feels like it could lead to a rehash of season five – and we all have Netflix for when we want to relive that season.

Who’s missing, then?

It’s interesting to see season three completely wiped from the line-up, but I guess the first All Stars did have four queens from the season represented and they were some of the best and most prolific. The only others I could imagine would have a chance at being selected would be Shangela and Delta Work – Shangela feels a bit too overexposed in the show but it may have been cool to see how Delta Work has developed since.

I think having Phi Phi from season four is a good shout – will this be her redemption? It’d have been great to see Willam back, but that’s never going to happen. Season five is interesting, it’s pretty much covered – maybe a bit too much. I’d have been tempted to replace Coco with season six’s Laganja, BenDeLaCreme or Courtney Act just to mix things up a little.

Season seven’s representation is perfect for me, Katya and Ginger are two of my all-time faves so it’s great to see them back.

Who’s gonna win?

My eyes are on Alaska. I also think Katya or Detox have a strong chance.

Phi Phi and Tatianna’s chances will depend on how they’ve changed since their early seasons.

When’s it back?

Rupaul’s Drag Race All Stars is back on August 25th on Logo TV and VH1 in the USA.
